Our TEFL school in Barcelona (ITA Barcelona) has developed special packages offered to those who want to obtain a student visa in Barcelona, Spain. The two packages are distinguished by whether you've already completed a TEFL course, or you're just starting down the road to becoming TEFL certified.

Student visas provide a legal right for English teachers to live, travel and teach in Barcelona legally for up to 20 hours per week while they are concurrently enrolled in classes at an approved school.

The student visa is valid for the time periods indicated below with the option to renew for another 12 months.

When should I apply for these options?

You should apply for this at least 3 months before you want to be in Barcelona.

The student visa process through the Spanish government can be lengthy so you want to be sure to give yourself enough time (anticipate an extra month during summer months).

Options for Enrolling in Spanish Classes
& Getting a Student Visa in Barcelona, Spain

A Student Visa includes a legal right to teach English in Barcelona, Spain. Options are based on which TEFL Course you take. Check out the two options available to you below.

Barcelona Student Visa Option

Option A: Language Study Only

Designed for those who have successfully completed an International TEFL Academy course in-person or online & who want a student visa to live & teach English legally in Barcelona, Spain.

Features

7-12 months of language classes (15-20 hours per week are required) - Language classes will be held at BCN Language Immersion Program Language School (BCNLIP). BCNLIP is accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, which is the highest accreditation a Spanish language school can obtain in Spain.

Orientation & Induction - BCNLIP will provide you with assistance and guidance with apartment hunting, opening a bank account, getting a NIE, form-filling in Spanish, etc.

Job Guidance - ITA Barcelona will provide you with assistance and guidance in finding an English-teaching job in Barcelona.

Professional Development (Optional) - Students can elect to spend 5-hours per week fine tuning their professional English teaching skills. The other 15-hours will be dedicated to language learning.

Class Hour Requirements

Students must take at least 15 hours of Spanish or Catalan in order to qualify for a student visa. Students may still add up to 5 hours of the other languages that they have listed, but it can no longer be the primary course of study.

*The $200 deposit to ITA and the 300€ course administration fees are non-refundable. This includes the first book, DHL EXPRESS service if consulate requires original documents, preparation of documents, consulting, etc. 

Other fees and costs:  All housing, travel, textbooks, and Spain Student Visa Fees are extra. 

Student Visa Processing: Tuition for the language classes is due ASAP to start the student visa process. All visa fees must be paid by the student to the Spain consulate directly when applying. Visa fee for Americans is approximately $160. Students applying for a Spain Student Visa can apply at the consulate in their home country at their assigned regional office OR once in Barcelona (see "Processing a Student Visa for Spain in Barcelona" at end of post).

Start Date

Start dates are flexible. Students should plan to begin the application process with ITA Barcelona at least three months before their intended start date (do not wait until the last moment).

Many Spaniards vacation throughout the month of August. Teachers should expect work at private language schools and even private tutoring to greatly decrease or even disappear during August, making it an ideal time for teachers themselves to also travel and vacation.

Option B: Barcelona TEFL Course + Language Study

Designed for those who plan to complete an accredited International TEFL Academy TEFL course in Barcelona and receive a student visa to live and teach English legally in Barcelona, Spain.

Features

4-week TEFL Certification Course - Classes to be held at ITA Barcelona. This is fulltime, Monday-Friday and you cannot take your language classes during this month. 

7-11 months of language classes (15-20 hours per week) - Language classes will be held at BCN Language Immersion Program Language School (BCNLIP). BCNLIP is accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, which is the highest accreditation a Spanish language school can obtain in Spain.

15 of your required 20 weekly hours will come from general language classes. You may choose among available classes in Spanish, Catalán, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Arabic, Chinese, and Hebrew.

Pricing Breakdown

Language study tuition is paid in full to ITA Barcelona to start the student visa paperwork. This can be paid as soon as you have made the decision to take the language study in Barcelona.

NOTE: The 300€ of the language study tuition are non-refundable course administration fees.

A $750 USD up-front deposit is paid to ITA to hold your spot in a Barcelona TEFL class.  Tuition for the language classes is due ASAP to start the student visa process.

Each of these 2 options include Spanish Classes: While you do not need Spanish to teach English, learning Spanish will allow you to actively participate in the social and cultural life. This is not only interesting and exciting but also allows you to grow on a personal level. These part-time Spanish Language courses provide great training and allow students the flexibility to fully immerse themselves in Spanish culture.
